Last Christmas Eve, I was doom scrolling in my girlfriend’s childhood bedroom. And really, really, really feeling a sense of impending doom.

There was a bit of yuletide ‘AI is going to take my job’ going on, but it was mainly the seemingly yawning divisions in society that were getting to me.Not the most festive scene I’ll admit. But then I went downstairs. Her massive family were all sat around the fire, as were my mum and dad for the first time, and they were about to start a game of White Elephant / Dirty Santa – whatever you call it. It was a scene best described as the advertising cliché of a wonderful Christmas time, but in this instance it was very real. How quaint? And I remembered that my phone wasn’t reality. People do like other people after all. Most of the time. That life is miles better when it’s shared. Obviously that’s a bit of a truism. But it’s basically been the theme of my year. Sharing. Sharing chocolate. Sharing prize money. Sharing the moment. Sharing the industry. Sharing everything basically. An odd theme for an individual award. But it’s mine.
